A Place for Connection, Learning, & Belonging

By transforming the community center into a hub for social, educational, and cultural activities, we aim to improve mental health, reduce isolation, and enhance quality of life for residents of all ages.

Proposed Uses of Community Center

Our intention is to use the community center for:

  • The residents to socialize with their friends offering them an opportunity to remain active
  • Business meeting space; health or legal speakers; food distribution
  • Space for small groups of residents to learn about technology for their personal business, we would provide laptops using grants or private funding to purchase laptops and internet access for their use (we would apply for Microsoft Grants for educational purposes)
  • Residents can use their expertise and provide after school tutoring to students enabling residents and students to engage with each other.
  • Hosting a regular storytelling hour for residents to share their childhood experiences. Again, this aims to encourage engagement between seniors, young and middle aged people. We could call the event: As I Remember
  • Displaying historical photos and stories of La Union and its first settlers, along with a timeline, to raise awareness of our cultural heritage.
  • Various activities: games, crafts, painting, reading, low impact exercise, dancing and music – recreational programs

Since the community center is conveniently situated in the heart of the town, renovating this building into a multipurpose community center can significantly enhance the quality of life for approximately 1,500 residents. Research indicates that socialization offers numerous health and mental benefits. Social interaction among seniors can improve their brain health. On the other hand, loneliness can increase the risk of dementia due to lack of interaction with other people. Using the community center can increase their happiness and quality of life. Many people need friends to be mentally healthy.
